Machairas Monastery.

Machairas Monastery is located on the eastern foot of Troodos Mountains, approx. 40 km. to the south of Nicosia.
In 1148, two monks found the icon of Saint Maria, which was protected by a knife ("machairas" in translation from Greek into English means "knife"). They asked the Emperor's permission to build a monastery in that area. Unfortunately the original building did not lasted out till nowadays. The present building dating from 19 century.
